Tulum or Playa del Carmen? Both are on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, both are popular with tourists — but they’re very different experiences. Here’s an honest comparison to help you decide, or plan a day trip between the two.
The Vibe
Tulum: Bohemian, eco-chic, wellness-focused. Yoga studios, vegan cafés, beach clubs, cenotes. Attracts digital nomads, couples, and wellness travelers.
Playa del Carmen: More urban, lively nightlife (5th Avenue), shopping malls, diverse restaurants. Attracts families, nightlife seekers, and cruise ship visitors. Ferry to Cozumel.
Beaches
Tulum wins. The beach road offers some of the most stunning Caribbean beaches anywhere — white sand, turquoise water, jungle backdrop. Playa has nice beaches too, but they’re more urban and can be affected by sargassum seaweed.
Getting Around
Tulum: A scooter or bike is the best way to get around. Taxis are expensive and there’s no reliable Uber. Distances are short — everything is within 15 minutes by scooter.
Playa del Carmen: More walkable in the center. Colectivos (shared vans) are cheap and frequent. Taxis are more reasonable than Tulum.
Cenotes
Tulum wins. More cenotes are closer and easier to reach by scooter. Gran Cenote, Calavera, Dos Ojos — all within 15 minutes.
Cost
Tulum is generally more expensive for accommodation and dining (the beach road is pricey). But transport is cheaper with a scooter rental than Playa’s taxis. For budget travelers, Tulum town has affordable options away from the beach.
Day Trip Between Them
Tulum and Playa del Carmen are only about 65 km apart — roughly 1 hour by car or colectivo. Many visitors stay in one and day-trip to the other.
If you’re based in Tulum, you can take a colectivo from the highway to Playa for about $45 MXN. Or rent a scooter for Tulum and grab a colectivo when you want to visit Playa.
