The Tulum beach road (Boca Paila road) is the heart of Tulum’s beach scene. Stretching from the Tulum Ruins in the north to the Sian Ka’an Biosphere entrance in the south, this narrow road is lined with beach clubs, boutique hotels, restaurants, and cenotes. Here’s how to make the most of it on a scooter or bike.
Getting There
From Tulum town (Aldea Zama), the beach road is about a 10-minute scooter ride. You can enter from the north (near the ruins) or from the south (the Tulum-Boca Paila junction). By bike, it’s about 20-30 minutes from town.
North Beach Zone (Near the Ruins)
The north end is quieter and has some of the most beautiful stretches of beach. It’s closer to the Tulum Ruins — you can visit the ruins and then head down the beach road.
- Tulum Ruins — Start your day here. Arrive early (8am) to beat the crowds. Park your scooter in the lot ($50 MXN)
- Playa Paraíso — One of the most photographed beaches in Mexico. Free access, just walk past the restaurants
- Ziggy Beach — Upscale beach club with good food and cocktails
- Casa Malca — Boutique hotel with a public beach club, famous for its art collection
Central Beach Zone
The busiest stretch with the most beach clubs, shops, and restaurants packed together.
- Coco Tulum — Iconic swing-over-the-beach photo spot
- Mezzanine — Thai food with ocean views, great for sunset
- Ahau Tulum — Famous for its giant Ven a la Luz sculpture
- Vagalume — Beach club with DJ sets, popular for parties
- Papaya Playa Project — Weekend parties, full moon events, great beach
South Beach Zone (Toward Sian Ka’an)
The south end is wilder, less developed, and more peaceful. The road gets rougher here — a mountain bike handles it well.
- Casa Cenote (Cenote Manatí) — Swim in a cenote connected to the sea. Possible manatee sightings!
- Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve — UNESCO World Heritage site. The road ends here. You can enter with a guide or kayak tour
Parking Tips
- Most beach clubs have small parking areas — arrive before 11am for easy parking
- Always lock your scooter to a metal post — never to trees (fine risk)
- Keep valuables with you, not on the scooter
- The road gets very busy after 11am — riding early or late afternoon is best
Riding Tips for the Beach Road
- 🐌 Go slow — the road is narrow with pedestrians, bikes, and taxis
- 🧱 Watch for speed bumps (topes) near every hotel entrance
- 🌙 The road is very dark at night — be extra careful after sunset
- 🚲 E-bikes and cruiser bikes are perfect for this road — flat and scenic
- 💧 Bring water — there aren’t many shops on the beach road
Rent a Scooter or Bike
The best way to explore the beach road is on your own wheels. No waiting for taxis, no surge pricing, total freedom.
