So you’ve booked your trip to Tulum — but Tulum doesn’t have its own airport. You’ll be flying into Cancún International Airport (CUN), which is about 130 km north of Tulum. Don’t worry — getting from Cancún to Tulum is straightforward. Here’s every option, with honest pros and cons.
How Far is Cancún Airport from Tulum?
The drive from Cancún Airport to Tulum takes approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic and your mode of transport. The route follows Highway 307 south along the Riviera Maya coast.
Option 1: Private Transfer (Most Comfortable)
A private transfer is the easiest way to get to Tulum. A driver meets you at arrivals with a sign, helps with your luggage, and takes you directly to your hotel or accommodation.
- Cost: ~$80–$120 USD one way (for up to 3-4 passengers)
- Time: 1.5–2 hours door to door
- Book in advance: Services like Serendipity Travels are reliable and professional
Pros: No stress, direct to your hotel, comfortable, great for arriving late at night or with lots of luggage. Worth it if you’re splitting the cost between a group.
Cons: Most expensive option.
Option 2: ADO Bus (Best Value)
The ADO bus is Mexico’s premium bus service and it’s genuinely comfortable — air conditioning, reclining seats, and luggage storage. It runs directly from the airport to Tulum’s ADO bus station in the town centre.
- Cost: ~$350–$500 MXN ($20–$30 USD) per person
- Time: 2–2.5 hours
- Schedule: Multiple departures daily — buy tickets at the airport or book online at ado.com.mx
Pros: Affordable, comfortable, reliable, and runs frequently.
Cons: Fixed schedule (you might wait for the next bus). Drops you at the bus station — you’ll need a taxi to your hotel. Keep your belongings with you at all times.
Option 3: Colectivo (Cheapest)
Colectivos are shared minivans that run along the highway between Cancún and Tulum. They’re the cheapest option, but you’ll need to get to Playa del Carmen first (by ADO or taxi) and then catch a colectivo from there to Tulum.
- Cost: ~$50–$80 MXN ($3–$5 USD) from Playa del Carmen to Tulum
- Time: 3+ hours total including connections
Pros: Very cheap, authentic local experience.
Cons: Not practical from the airport directly. Multiple connections. No luggage space. Not great if you’re arriving tired after a long flight.
Option 4: Rental Car
Rental car agencies are available at the airport. The drive to Tulum is straightforward — one main highway (307) heading south.
- Cost: From ~$30–$60 USD per day (plus insurance and fuel)
- Time: 1.5–2 hours
Pros: Freedom to explore at your own pace. Good if you’re visiting multiple destinations.
Cons: Driving in Mexico can be stressful if you’re not used to it. Insurance costs add up. Parking in Tulum can be tricky. You won’t really need a car once you’re in Tulum — a scooter or bike is the best way to get around.
What About the New Tulum Airport?
There is a new airport being built closer to Tulum (Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport). However, it currently has very limited flights and routes. For now, Cancún Airport (CUN) remains the main hub for international and domestic flights. This may change in the future — check the latest flight availability before booking.
Our Recommendation
For most travellers, we recommend either:
- Private transfer if it’s in your budget (especially for couples or groups)
- ADO bus if you’re travelling solo or on a budget
Once you arrive in Tulum, ditch the four wheels. The best way to explore is on a scooter, e-bike or bicycle from Mexigo Rentals. We have two locations in Aldea Zama and Kan Tulum, and we’re open daily from 8am to 7pm.
