Essential safety tips for riding scooters and bikes in Tulum. Read before you ride!

Traffic Rules

Tulum follows standard Mexican traffic laws. Key rules:

  • 🚦 Drive on the right side of the road
  • ⛑️ Helmets are mandatory for scooters (we provide 2)
  • 🛣️ ATVs and bicycles are NOT allowed on the highway
  • 🚫 No driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • 📱 No phone use while driving
  • 💡 Use headlights at night

Road Conditions

Tulum roads can be different from what you’re used to:

  • 🕳️ Watch for potholes — especially on side streets
  • 🌧️ Roads get slippery when wet — slow down in rain
  • 🚧 Speed bumps (topes) are everywhere — slow down!
  • 🐕 Watch for dogs, cyclists, and pedestrians on the road
  • 🌙 Some streets have poor lighting at night — ride carefully

Scooter-Specific Tips

First time on a scooter? No worries:

  • 🔑 We’ll show you how to operate it at pickup
  • 🐢 Start slow — practice in a quiet area first
  • ⛽ Nearest gas station: Google Maps
  • 🔒 Always lock your scooter — never lock to trees
  • 📸 We take a condition video at pickup — this protects both of us
